Yes. Latitude goes from the South to the north. Over land the SST's are ignored
in CCM. But, yes I believe the datasets interpolate to land points (not adjusting
for elevation or anything, so the numbers are meaningless over land).

No, non-cycled SST datasets are the same as cycled datasets and go from South to
north. The only difference between cycled and non-cycled datasets is the
number of times kept and the dates. Actually you could run a non-cycled dataset
with SST cycling turned ON -- if you wanted to. And you could run a cycled
dataset without SST cycling if you only ran it for a year or less...

I can't tell you about COLA datasets. CCM3.2 requires input datasets to be in
CCM history tape format, the next release of the CCM will have netCDF input
datasets. Which will presumably make it easier to work with the input datasets...
