khan,

the answer to your question is that CCM2 uses prescribed monthly
average SSTs in its default configuration. The "default" SST dataset
is composed of 12 monthly records, and if the simulation runs longer
than a year then these same temperatures are recycled until the
simulation is completed. There is a documented option (ccm2 user's
guide p. 36, e.g.) for the user to supply his own prescribed SST
dataset at any time resolution desired. The archived R15 simulation
case 421 (ccm2 datasets and circulation statistics p. 43) used the
default option, i.e. case 421 recycled the same 12 monthly SSTs for
the entire 10 year integration. in any case, SSTs are never
recomputed based on current state information during a model run
because there is no provision for an interactive ocean in the
CCM2---only non-standard modifications would support even a bucket
ocean. to summarize, SSTs are always prescribed in the standard CCM2,
the only questions are at what time intervals and whether they're
recycled.

hope this helps,
charlie
