Are you using CCM3.2 or the latest version of the CCM -- CCM3.6.6?

If you are using CCM3.2 you need to use the input SOM SST datasets. The problem
you are having is that the SST datasets you are providing don't have mixed layer
depth on them -- you need to supply datasets that do. If you are using CCM3.6.6,
you have the same problem and need to add mixed layer depth to the SST file.
However, as SOM has not been scientifically verified in CCM3.6.6 we *strongly*
suggest that you don't use it! What is recommended is that you use the new SOM
code through the CSM flux coupler. Although SOM was ported to CCM3.6.6 it was
never verified with climate simulations. The new version of SOM has been verified
and there are scientific papers on simulations that it has produced.
