Bas van Ruijven, Project Scientist I

Bas van Ruijven is Project Scientist I with the Integrated Assessment Modeling group of the Climate & Global Dynamics Division at NCAR. Bas holds an MSc in Environmental Science and a PhD in Energy Science from Utrecht University. His PhD thesis focused on Modeling Energy and Development, especially how the typical dynamics of developing countries could be included in integrated assessment models. Bas has been visiting researcher at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden, where he worked on multi-agent models for energy use and climate change. He also stayed several months in India, at IGIDR, Mumbai and IISc Bangalore to develop a model for household energy use. Since 2008, Bas was Policy Researcher at the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL), working on energy issues in the IMAGE Integrated Assessment Model. He joined NCAR in September 2011 to work in energy and integrated assessment in the iPETS model.

Research interests of Bas cover a wide range of topics, dealing with energy, technology, development and environmental issues. Applying the results of integrated assessment models, Bas has worked on numerous projects. These include for instance the development of a low-carbon energy vision for Europe in 2050 and the POEM project (Policy Options to Engage Emerging Asian Economies in a post-Kyoto regime) and the Asian Modeling Exercise. Bas has been a lead author for UNEP's Global Environmental Outlook and the Global Energy Assessment.

With respect to education, Bas has supervised five MSc students with their internships and theses, mostly covering topic of modeling energy and development. Furthermore, he taught and co-developed courses in MSc programs at Utrecht University on "Energy Modeling and Economics", "Global Change and Sustainability", and "Sustainable Development - An Integrated Systems Approach". Bas has been a guest lecturer in master programs at Chalmers University in Gothenburg and Lund University, Sweden.
