VEMAP File Format
VEMAP data files are stored in netCDF
format. NetCDF, developed by Unidata,
is a platform independent, self-describing binary file format, designed
for the storage and retrieval of scientific data.
Each VEMAP data files contains extensive metadata documenting the content,
quality, and features of the data set. This metadata provides the technical
information necessary to efficiently use the data in the VEMAP collection. In
addition, this approach allows the user to leverage the inherent capabilities
of netcdf which allow direct import into a wide variety of existing
software tools.
