Uncertainties in terrestrial carbon (C)-climate feedbacks remain poorly characterized, particularly in Arctic systems with extensive permafrost soils. Permafrost soils contain a large fraction of terrestrial C storage and if permafrost thaws signi cantly under projected warming, this C may be vulnerable decomposition and release to the atmosphere. This lecture will cover the current state of knowledge on permafrost C and how thawing permafrost can influence future climate change by altering the balance between ecosystem C release and uptake.
